Grey's Anatomy -- My Soapbox

Grey's Anatomy is my favorite show. Now it's going to have to struggle to keep my loyalty.

Let's start here.

I was very very shocked to see them put one of the gay lovers in a no-kidding Army uniform, complete with 2nd Infantry Division unit patch and combat patch (by the way, since there's a brigade of the 2d ID assigned at Ft. Lewis up the road from the fictitious "Seattle Grace Hospital").

The other soldier is a patient preparing to undergo a radical brain tumor treatment, and he isn't in uniform during the episode.

The two share a steamy kiss, which has received all sorts of press already. Let me honest here, homosexual situations in movies, on television, in my life, really truly don't bug me. One of my favorite shows, Six Feet Under on HBO, had one of the best gay characters on television and it was fascinating to see the character develop. I have several friends/colleagues in my personal and (civilian) professional life who are homosexual and it's fine.

I don't judge what's out there, whether I agree with it or not. We'll leave it at that.

But to have that guy in a real-looking Army uniform performing homosexual acts gives a very awkward perception to viewers. I don't agree with that and I was not pleased with seeing that on TV. Homosexual conduct is deemed incompatible with military service. It's the law. ABC should not have put it's spin on their opinions of the matter when we're a nation at war. I don't know whether it's really happening in the military now, and if it was happening in my unit/workspace I'd have to take appropriate actions on it. ABC should have left the uniform out of it. Really.

And I'm not the only one with reactions to this. Yes, even an hour after it happened!

I hope AFCYBER don't come after me for saying these things. I don't think I've done anything wrong.

Eh, I'm sure there are men-and women for that matter- carrying on same sex relationships in the military as we speak. Whether or not it was cool for Grey's Anatomy to highlight such a relationship on television??? I'm not sure what I think about that. I suppose if I was in the military I might think about it more deeply, but frankly I don't really care.

There are gay people everywhere. Some of my very close friends are in same sex relationships (remember my friend you met recently, Leela from New ORleans? She gave you a hug at the temple.). I seem to be a magnet for gay men's friendships. Over 1/2 my close guy friends in Guam turned out to be gay. I just got a message yesterday from James W. that I use to play cello with at magnet school (you remember his brother? John Walker). He's gay as all get out and he wants to get together with me to play duets, lol.

I'm by no means an activist for gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgendered lifestyle, but it's something we're faced with nearly daily so I've learned to live with it. Everyone is looking for somebody to love-sometimes that somebody turns out to be the same gender. I've given up on thinking too deeply about the issue.

Just wanted to add that I do think it was a bit off of the show to use a specific military unit's ID on the uniform. A bit too detailed if you ask me. I can see how that might piss off the people attached to that particular unit.

I wonder why they chose such specifics?

Major Mom, you totally got it right. :-) I agree with you completely - putting the actors in uniform crossed a line for me.

P.S. Thanks for linking to my blog. :-)

I agree with Margaret. Doesn't bother me, even in the military, but they should not have used the patch to a specific unit. I know there are gay ppl in the military, just like there are in the civilian workforce. I honestly don't think they CHOOSE that life, it is genetic. But I'll save that whole sermon for my blog one day...lol

Don't mind me, I'm just here to stir up trouble.

As your gay male friend (right, Dave, you hunka hunka burning meteorologist?) I have to chime in here. It's a ploy to grab attention and it worked because you and others are writing about it. It's just fiction...the entertainment industry loves to take liberties with the truth. Does it undermine the public's perception of the military? I don't think so. Travel around in uniform and you'll find the public is overwhelmingly postive towards service members, this despite heinous acts committed by real servicemen (murder, rape, drugs, cheating). A kiss on TV by actors dressed as soldiers will do no harm.

It's sad that this kiss will get more press than good things like Anheuser-Busch's annual Hero Salute program, which we always take advantage of.

I guess that's why I stick to shows like Deadliest Catch and Mythbusters. No way are any of those guys kissing each other, and the only things killed are crabs and Buster.
